Liberty Prairie Conservancy recognized our own Barbara Turner with their first Lake County Conservation Award at their annual meeting in May, 2011. Barbara Turner has long been a passionate voice for conservation in Long Grove, her pride and joy is the 36-acre Reed-Turner Woodland Nature Preserve.

After taking a class taught by renowned naturalist and writer May T. Watts at the Morton Arboretum in the late 1970’s, Barbara made caring for and protecting this woodland her life’s work. Through Barbara’s persistence, Reed-Turner Woodland became one of the first private properties to be preserved in Illinois by a non-profit conservation group. She has also been a pioneer in woodland restoration and stewardship.

Barbara Turner pictured receiving Lake County Conservation Award

“What also makes Barbara special is her life-long commitment to mentoring and teaching others,” says Jane Wittig, president of the Long Grove Park District. “She has made many people into land stewards, and I’m honored to be one of them.”

Another person inspired by Barbara Turner is Steve Byers of the Illinois Nature Preserves Commission. Despite being tired after carrying out prescribed burns on 1,200 acres of land earlier that day, Steve rushed to personally congratulate Barbara that evening!
